STATEMENT
While growing up in
a rural New England community, I've always felt connected to
the natural world. The land, sea, trees, flowers and sky seem
to speak to me. Fortunately, my inspiration is endless. Between
traveling to scenic places or simply overlooking my studio garden,
combined with the various times of day and changing seasons,
there is no shortage of beautiful images for me to record. I
enjoy painting everything from majestic landscapes and serene
seascapes to lush gardens and colorful, floral still lifes.
As for painting and
the process, it is both a challenge and a reward for me. I enjoy
letting my hand interpret what my eye is seeing that day. In
a way, my paintings are a visual diary of my life's journey and
experiences. I work primarily in oil on primed, stretched canvas.
I begin blocking in large areas with luminous color. I then go
through a random series of scrubbing, layering, blending and
layering again. I feel it's important to have a part of each
painting "sing" more loudly than the rest - whether
it's the sky, ethereal and mystical, or a leafless sprig poking
around a glorious oak. By recording these special elements and
moments on canvas, I hope to bring the majesty and spirit of
nature indoors.
